As a London cabbie I want ALL RESTRICTIONS lifted for me to use ALL of the ORN network.
I accept NO COMPROMISE.
Whilst driving EAST along Lower Thames Street into Byward st (towerhill) Ive noticed the Olympic lane AND the solid white line cycle lane converge so close
that it is impossible to drive through WITHOUT breaking the highway laws!
I am thinking of driving to this location 2 hours before the 100m olympic final and STOPPING my taxi at the point it breaks the law and to wait untill the police
find a recovery truck to LIFT my taxi to a legal part of the road!!!
Im sure there are many more locations where it is NOW IMPOSSIBLE to drive legal and suggest a similar coordinated course of action at EVERY point, from willing drivers who feel the same as me??
Please circulate the idea to all your members.

Was just trying to find out when ORN lanes become operational, stumbled upon this webpage, and what struck me was the picture of the cabs lined up next to paragraphs explaining VIP and olympic family use of ORN.

I am incensed by what is going on in London in the name of the Olympic Games. Of course as a spectical in itself the Games will be a great showcase for the Capital, but at what cost to us ‘ordinary’ woking people who rely on the roads to make our living?
Not being allowed into the ORN is outrageous, of course it is, but look at what else is happening out there. Traffic light rephasing is something that is already affecting all of us even before the Lanes are open. Why is this necessary?
I come in each morning on the A13 and because of a rephasing of the lights at Barking, my journey has increased by a half hour. What a way to start a day’s work! Additionally, taking away almost all our ranks in and around Mayfair, allowing the Olympic cars to wait on them is absolutely disgraceful, and have you seen the barrier in Curzon street waiting to be brought into service?
Each day nearer to the Games we get I cannot believe what my eyes are seeing. No left turns, no right, check points manned by individuals in hi viz jackets, who the hell are these people and why do we need checkpoints?
Why can’t I pick up or set down around Russell Square? Why does the ORN go east and west along the Embakment for miles and also along the A40 into Maylebone and Euston Roads when they simply duplicate each other. How many miles of ORN do these people need?
No, these games will be an absolute disaster for the cab trade, and all this is written on one of my good days!
Good luck all.

Can I just say, I don’t see the point of another demo at tower bridge. Tfl will do nothing. I can’t stress enough, dont ask drivers to demonstrate until it really matters and for me the authorities need to be told unless we’re allowed in the lanes we will stop all traffic around the Olympic village. Tell them we will demonstrate with or without police, council consent. This is the only way we will get what we are due!

I say give them a week into the games to see how it affects us. If it’s as bad as we suspect then go the nuclear option of stragegic demos at points affecting the stadium. Or, target Tessa Jowel and Seb Coe to stop them attending the games. I will only get this milliant if i’m stopped from earning my living. This is’nt about athletes getting to their events, they should all be in the village,if they stay outside then it’s their lookout. This is about all the IOC and corporate sponsors with their nose’s in the troth. We need all twenty four thousand demonstrating not the same thousand or so. Also, Lets put the LTDA on the spot and see wether they will support us, we need a united front. The media will tear us to shreads if it’s only the UCG, accusing us of being a breakaway faction, not being the voice of the trade. Thats my tuppence worth. Be lucky, we are gonna need it……………………..

The 76 page booklet has made things as clear as mud.I don’t need to be told to wear my badge ,have my bill and be nice to people, after 50years having been a cab driver these things are as usual as putting my socks on in the morning.I also don’t need that smug, sanctimonious Seb Coe telling cab drivers how well they are going do when we can’t ply for hire in the areas that are most important to us.There surely must be a case for loss of Human Rights to work but of course who is going to challenge it.
Getting back to this book it is virtually telling us that “the knowledge” we have all done now goes out the window and it doesn’t explain the use of bus lanes that now have the the olympic logos ie Vauxhall Bridge Road bus lane now painted with the olympic logo as well as bus lane the blue signs have the olympic loga and the bus plus taxis and motorbikes??,so here’s to Tower Bridge!!.

Well let me see, If I go on a drive in demo on the 23rd July 2012 (monday next) I will suffer what exactly?… the drive from my home? the Diesel or time that takes me there? The risk that me or my fellow drivers become hated to express their opinions towards how wrong it is to changes an entire 20,000 plus workforce their daily living over what are essentially “Games” ?
If you as Licensed Taxi drivers cannot see how the frightened “Elite” are flexing their power over you with the Olympic lanes … oh and by the way have you not noticed the “Three phased Traffic Lights” that make simple phased changes now silly…? look at lights all over central London, you will see lights that usually changed forwards and across to, forwards,… forwards and across…
Be there On Monday, … London is almost Empty … daytime and Nights all but the odd rush, and the elite could easily fly to and from the places they want Inclusive of us taxis (should we be there and not be away on our holidays) yet the fact that Rickshaws can go anywhere as bycycles must make that positively our next demo…. lets all go hire a rickshaw from opposite the post office tower
and drive (legally) down the Olympic lanes with our protest banners on board, as I know who a bus driver or VIP elite would choose to follow between a Rickshaw and a taxi…!! see you on Monday At 4…

The ORN is simply is ridiculous!
The London Taxi is renowned world wide for the excellent service we provide, However not being able to access large areas or make Left and Right Turns will simple cripple that great service and make it almost impossible to provide a service at all.
The very thing that makes us the best Taxi’s in the world is our Knowledge of Londons streets and that is being taken away by the ORN.
You wouldn’t hire a good Carpenter, take away his tools and expect him to do a good job.
Taxi’s should be allowed access to the ORN and be exempt from the vast majority of No Left, No Right Turns during the Games in order to provide the service we are known for.
See you on Monday at 4pm
