Rapes and Sexual assaults in Unbooked Minicabs UP 14%!

Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police have just announced the latest figures for rapes and sexual assaults committed by Minicab drivers in unbooked vehicles.

111 offences took place in 2010 which in real terms is a 14% increase in the number of attacks recorded in 2008 where 98 women were sexually assaulted by predators who line up outside clubs and bars in London waiting for their next victim.

2009 also saw 140 women raped and sexually assaulted, which gives a combined figure of 352 victims in the past 3 years.

Bearing in mind that the rape crisis group The Havens state on their website that only 10-20% of rape victims actually report that they have been attacked we can only estimate that the ‘true’ number of attacks is somewhere in the region of 2000-3000.

And that is just in the past 3 years!

3000 lives ruined forever!

3000 families shattered!

And 3000 satisfied sexual predators on our streets looking for their next victim, which TfL have made it extremely easy to do by allowing them to line up and wait outside clubs, bars and other venues safe in the knowledge that they won’t be caught.

They are fully responsible for creating the scenario where the general public now accept these cars as the norm, thereby leading them into a false sense of security, and TfL expect them to know the difference especially when the majority are intoxicated.

Kulveer Ranger recently admitted this when he advised the public ‘not to get in these cars’, although his comment was quickly removed from TfL’s website.

Transport for London have rushed out these figures and worded the press release in a deliberate attempt to conceal the true statistics which show that they are failing miserably.

They claim that there has been a 20% fall in sexual assaults since last year when there was 140 attacks, like it’s something to be proud of.

Whatever way you look at it, there have still been 111 women raped by minicab drivers which TfL have given a license to.

And all because they will not admit that their STaN Agenda is a total failure!

How many more will there be before they hold their hands up and admit that they have created a monster which they cannot control?

When they brought in the ‘Safer Travel at Night’ programme they made absolutely no provisions for when it all goes wrong. There are only 58 enforcement officers, of which only 4 work at night, and none of them work at weekends.

Do they really think this is adequate?

Anyone with a modicum of commonsense can see that if you continue to issue 16,000 licenses year after year that you will need to appoint more enforcement officers to regulate them.

And as far as we are aware these enforcement officers are not police officers, and therefore if the vehicle doesn’t have a green roundel in the window they have no more powers of arrest than you or I do.

When you are in a hole… STOP DIGGING!

There are now reportedly 80,000 Private Hire Licenses issued, and it won’t be long before that figure tops 100,000.

Transport for London must cease issuing licenses immediately until they can get this problem under control, and they must raise the cost of a PH license to cover for adequate enforcement to try and stem the flow of these attacks, and put them out on the streets when they are most needed ie. at night and weekends when London is at it busiest.

And they must stop them from lining up outside venues waiting to be hired where the only record of a booking is a name written on a clipboard.

Why do we need Satellite offices and clipboard Johnnies in this day and age?

There is not a person on the planet who doesn’t have a mobile phone, and with many many PH companies now having mobile phone apps, calling for a car has never been easier. Then there would be a traceable record of the call!

Mary Dowdye was recently removed from her position for implementing the disastrous measures that have contributed to the number of attacks, and these should be reinstated immediately.

Planning permission for Satellite offices, and records of bookings must be kept on the premises until this problem is under control.

Then the whole Satellite Office fiasco must eventually be scrapped so it cannot get out of control again!

London has now changed places with New York as one of the most dangerous citys in the world, and it was only after New York hit rock bottom that they decided to do something about it.

Are we going to wait until then before we act? Or are we going to tackle this problem now whilst we still have a chance?

Judging by how TfL have tried to disguise the figures as some sort of victory I think we know the answer to that!

They also claim there have been 1300 arrests in the past year, but fail to mention how many of those were convicted. Looking back at the last 2 years conviction rates (6 in 2008 and 3 in 2009) is it any wonder!

Smoke and Mirrors, lies and deception, call it what you will, but if the figures were any good you can be sure they would be screaming them from the rooftops.

You can fool some of the people some of the time… but you can’t fool the United Cabbies Group EVER!!!
